Please sir, may I have some more?

Does anyone know a good humane way to get rid of squirrels? We’re gearing up for the winter bird-feeding season and my old enemies have already discovered the free lunch we are putting out. I don’t want to dig out the BB gun as these little beasties are just trying to fill their bellies like all the rest of us. Last year we tried the so-called ‘squirrel proof’ seed that they supposedly wouldn’t like the taste of but they just gobbled it down with the rest of the feast. Any ideas?

Hi! I was talking about your squirrel issue with Hubby and he suggested getting a steel pole and fixing your bird feeder on top of that. Make sure it's not located close to any trees or places from where squirrels can jump onto the feeder. He also said to make sure the diameter of the pole is wide enough so that the squirrels can't "hug" their way up the pole! LOL! Seriously, there was a video on Funniest Home Videos where a squirrel used a clothesline and did a James Bond 007 kinda move and shimmied his way to the bird feeder and dropped himself off! If worse comes to worse, you can grease the steel pole and that way they won't be able to hang on. Let me know what happens :)

Thanks! I was thinking of the steel pole but the only place far enough away that they couldn't jump from a tree or the deck would be way out in the middle of the yard. We wouldn't have a very good view of the birds that far away but I guess the idea is to feed and not exploit them!

Now there's this Blue Jay...
